BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya
The Mahanayake Theras of the Malwathu, Asgiriya, Amarapura and Ramanna Buddhist Chapters have written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressing their opposition to the proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of judges, according to Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President Rajeev Amarasuriya.
Speaking to the media on Monday after meeting the Mahanayake Thera of the Malwathu Chapter, Amarasuriya said he had been informed that the Chief Prelates had conveyed their position to the President in writing, claiming that the proposed constitutional amendment was inappropriate.
“I believe this Government has no moral right to proceed with this matter,” Amarasuriya said.
