The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered Badulla district MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake be remanded till 1 April 2025 in connection with one of three corruption allegations levelled against him.
The MP was arrested by the Bribery Commission yesterday after providing a statement in connection with three separate bribery case allegations.
The charges stem from his previous tenure as a State Minister, with one key allegation accusing him of causing a loss of Rs. 23 million to the Government by allegedly withdrawing fixed deposits held in a State bank. Dassanayake was subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, which decided to remand him.
The Court also granted bail for two of the corruption charges. Accordingly, the Court ordered the release of Dassanayake on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 5 million each over the first two charges. However, the remaining charge led to his remand.
