Killing of JVP Leader Rohana Wijeweera: Court reserves order for 15 July

A Colombo Magistrate yesterday postponed for 15 July to deliver the order of the case where retired Major General Asoka Thoradeniya was allegedly involved in the killing of former JVP Leader Rohana Wijeweera.

Earlier, the Court issued an injunction restraining former Provincial Councillor and Frontline Socialist Party Central Committee Member Indrananda de Silva, preventing him from making statements against Thoradeniya over the killing of Wijeweera to the electronic and print media and posting them on social media.

The order was made under the Online Security Act, which has been contested by democratic forces in Sri Lanka.

de Silva had made a number of YouTube statements saying that Thoradeniya was present or took part in killing Wijeweera, who was arrested by a military team led by late General Janaka Perera.

The restraining order, which prohibits making and publishing false and hateful statements which would mislead the public against Thoradeniya, was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake.

After considering the submissions made by Senior Counsel Sudath Jayasundara instructed by K. Kanshayogan on behalf of the complainant Major General Ashoka Thoradeniya under Section 24 of the Online Security Act, No. 9 of 2024 against former North Central Provincial Council Member Indrananda de Silva, former Attorney General and President’s Counsel Sanjay Rajaratnam and Attorney Sudath Jayasundara presented evidence before the Court on behalf of the complainant.

Complainant Thoradeniya had taken this step due to severe threats being made to him and his family by de Silva, who had made these allegations through various media.
