KDU lecturer released on bail after arrest over false claim on ISIS suspects

Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Senior lecturer on law, Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe was granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Court yesterday following his arrest by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

He was accused of making false statements to the media regarding the recent arrest of ISIS suspects of Sri Lankan origin in India.

The Fort Magistrate’s Court ordered Amarasinghe’s release on personal bail of Rs. 1 million after he was produced before the court.

He was detained for claiming that the four suspects arrested in India recently Mohamed Nushran, Mohamed Nafran Nowfer, Mohamed Rasdeeen Abdul Raseem, and Mohamed Faris Mohamed Farook for their alleged links to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), were listed by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on the Easter Attacks as individuals recommended for rehabilitation.

During the television interview in which he made these comments, Amarasinghe also criticised authorities for allegedly failing to implement the Commission’s recommendations.
