Japan has agreed to provide a grant of Yen 2.18 billion, about Rs. 4.56 billion, to upgrade the pumping station in the Kelani River basin, Cabinet Spokesperson and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.
He was speaking at the media briefing on decisions taken at Monday’s (12) Cabinet meeting. Dr. Jayatissa said the project is expected to reduce flood risk in the lower sub-basin covering Wattala and Peliyagoda. It is also intended to support sustainable urban development and to free up land that can be developed for national economic activities.
The Cabinet approved signing an Exchange of Notes with the Government of Japan and a grant agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The President presented the proposal.
