  • MP Archchuna Ramanathan says Jaffna should be handed to Tamil Nadu along with Kachchatheevu island

Jaffna District MP Archchuna Ramanathan triggered controversy in Parliament yesterday after stating that Jaffna should be handed over to Tamil Nadu along with Kachchatheevu Island, arguing that people in Tamil Nadu would provide better protection for Sri Lankan Tamils.

Making his remarks during a parliamentary session, Ramanathan also congratulated Indian actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay on his recent electoral victory. He then referred to earlier discussions on Kachchatheevu, stating that when Vijay had raised the issue, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had rejected the proposal.

“Along with Kachchatheevu, Jaffna too should be given to Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu people will protect us,” he said, which will likely to draw strong political reactions given their implications on national sovereignty.

Ramanathan made the statement while raising concerns over infrastructure challenges in the Northern Province, particularly electricity supply in island areas.

He said that during a recent visit to Delft Island, residents reported that electricity was available only five days a week, questioning when the Government would ensure uninterrupted power supply to the region.
