JVP, CPI(M) discuss economic reforms and governance during Colombo talks

Sri Lanka’s economic stabilisation efforts, governance reforms and public welfare agenda featured prominently during talks between leaders of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) in Colombo this week.

The discussions focused on the National People’s Power (NPP) Government’s measures to stabilise the economy, initiatives to improve public welfare, the increase in plantation sector wages and efforts to strengthen governance by addressing corruption and dismantling privilege-based politics.

The meeting was held on Monday at the JVP headquarters, where JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva hosted senior CPI(M) leaders Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat. JVP Politburo member and Minister Bimal Ratnayake also participated.

The two sides also exchanged views on the political developments that led to the JVP and NPP’s emergence as Sri Lanka’s governing coalition and discussed broader political developments in the region.

Prakash Karat served as CPI(M) General Secretary from 2005 to 2015 and later assumed the role of interim coordinator following the death of Sitaram Yechury in April 2025. Brinda Karat is a member of the CPI(M) Politburo and a former General Secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association.

The meeting formed part of continuing engagement between the Sri Lankan and Indian leftist parties on political, economic and governance issues.
