Iran has granted limited safe passage to several Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, Tehranian Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali said, without specifying how many ships were allowed to pass.

Fathali made the remarks while speaking at broadcaster India Today’s conclave in New Delhi. The move marks a rare exception to the broader restriction on maritime traffic through the waterway, which Iran has largely halted amid the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel.

Two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bound for ports in the country’s west crossed the Strait of Hormuz, the South Asian country’s Ports, Shipping and Waterways Ministry said. “They crossed the Strait of Hormuz early morning safely and are en route to India,” Ministry Special Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha said at a news conference in New Delhi.
