Indian naval ship Sunayna, deployed as IOS Sagar with a multinational crew from 16 countries, is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Colombo today (15) as part of the Indian Navy’s regional maritime cooperation initiative.
According to the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka, the Colombo visit marks the seventh port call of the second edition of the deployment.
The IOS Sagar was flagged off from Mumbai on 2 April 2026 following the completion of combined harbour training for officers and sailors from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanmar, Singapore, Seychelles, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor Leste and the United Arab Emirates.
The training conducted at Indian naval establishments covered seamanship, navigation, communication procedures, safety of life at sea, firefighting and damage control. It also included specialised modules on Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations and advanced bridgemanship.
During the Colombo port call, the Commanding Officer of the vessel is scheduled to meet senior Sri Lanka Navy officials, including the Commander Western Naval Area and the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet.
The multinational crew is also expected to participate in professional and sports interactions with the Sri Lanka Navy and visit several locations in Sri Lanka.
The Indian High Commission said the initiative reflects the vision of “One Ocean, One Mission” aimed at strengthening engagement and cooperation among maritime partners in support of maritime security.
The deployment of IOS Sagar and the Colombo port call are also in line with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions (MAHASAGAR), reflecting the Indian Navy’s role in promoting cooperative maritime engagement in the Indian Ocean region.
