Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha Om Birla yesterday welcomed a Sri Lankan parliamentary delegation led by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP S.M. Marikkar during a meeting at the Parliament of India.
In a post on X, Birla said he had the pleasure of receiving the delegation led by Marikkar, who also chairs the Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Issues, noting that the interaction reflected longstanding civilisational ties, shared democratic values and a strong bilateral partnership between the two countries.
He said discussions centred on enhancing parliamentary cooperation as a key pillar of bilateral relations, with emphasis on structured exchanges between legislatures to strengthen democratic institutions and share best practices. He also highlighted the role of parliamentary committees in promoting accountability and effective governance.
Birla reaffirmed India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy and briefed the delegation on the country’s progress in infrastructure and connectivity, including the increasing role of innovation and technology in improving parliamentary processes.
He noted the mutual interest in expanding cooperation through capacity building and institutional engagement, expressing confidence that such exchanges would further deepen parliamentary ties and strengthen India–Sri Lanka relations.
Birla also conveyed his best wishes to the visiting delegation for a productive and meaningful stay in India.
The Daily FT learns that the delegation of Sri Lankan MPs as part of their study tour, yesterday met with representatives of Committees of Indian Parliament focusing on housing and urban development as well as transportation. They were also briefed about the workings of Indian Parliamentary committees.
