Work has commenced on the construction of a four-storeyed medical ward complex at the District General Hospital Mullaitivu with grant assistance of Rs. 600 million from the Government of India.
The project follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and Acting Health Ministry Secretary W.K. Wickremasinghe during the April visit of Indian Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan to Sri Lanka. According to the Indian High Commission, the project includes construction of a modern ward complex equipped with lifts, air-conditioning systems, fire protection facilities, generators, UPS systems and piped medical gas supply. The facility is expected to improve treatment capacity for non-communicable diseases by increasing screening rates for those above 35 years and reducing referrals to hospitals outside the district. Upon completion, the hospital’s bed occupancy rate is projected to increase by over 150%, strengthening healthcare delivery in Mullaitivu.
The project is being implemented under the India-Sri Lanka High Impact Community Development Project framework, under which 18 grant-funded projects are currently underway across 25 districts in Sri Lanka covering sectors including health, housing, education, fisheries and renewable energy.
