Indian Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan yesterday held bilateral talks with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat, with both sides pledging to deepen cooperation across key sectors including energy, trade, and digital transformation.
The Indian Vice President, on a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka, his first since assuming office, was welcomed by President Dissanayake, who extended congratulations on his appointment. Radhakrishnan, in turn, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality.
Discussions centred on strengthening longstanding bilateral ties, with a focus on expanding collaboration in the economy, education, health, tourism, investment, and trade sectors. Both sides placed particular emphasis on energy security and port development, amid ongoing global uncertainties.
Key projects, including the proposed energy hub in Trincomalee and an India-Sri Lanka oil pipeline, were discussed as part of broader efforts to enhance regional energy connectivity.
Addressing a special media briefing, Indian Foreign Ministry Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the importance of such initiatives at a time when the region is grappling with the fallout of an energy crisis linked to the evolving situation in West Asia.
The talks also covered India-assisted housing projects and initiatives funded under a $ 450 million package for areas affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
President Dissanayake expressed appreciation for India’s continued support, including post-disaster assistance and Budgetary allocations.
Recalling recent high-level engagements, including his visit to India and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka, the President noted a significant expansion in bilateral cooperation across the economic, social, and cultural sectors.
Dissanayake also acknowledged India’s support during Sri Lanka’s recent crises, including fuel assistance during the energy shortage, and sought closer collaboration in technology, particularly in digitalisation of the public sector and human resource development.
Fisheries issues were also discussed, with both sides agreeing on the need for a sustainable, long-term solution.
During the visit, Radhakrishnan also met Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and other political leaders.
