The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved the immediate renovation of a critical 2.2-kilometer stretch of highway connecting the Kerawalapitiya Expressway access point to the Elakanda highway, a key route serving the industrial zone developed by the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation.

The area, spanning around 400 acres, hosts major entities including Litro Gas Ltd., Ceylon Petroleum Cooperation, the Ceylon Electricity Board, as well as several Board of Investment-approved projects. Although the Road Development Authority (RDA) had initiated the highway development in 2021, construction was left incomplete due to the country’s economic crisis.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that the road has now fallen into a dilapidated state, creating challenges for transportation and industrial operations. The Cabinet has therefore approved both the immediate renovation of the highway and the conduct of a formal study to explore long-term expansion solutions.

“The work will be financed using allocations from the mid-term Budget framework,” he added.

Dr. Jayatissa said the initiative aims to ensure smoother access for industrial and commercial traffic in the area, supporting operational efficiency and economic activity within one of the country’s key industrial zones.
