Illustrious civil servant Bradman Weerakoon yesterday passed away at the age of 95.

In 1954, Weerakoon joined the Ceylon Civil Service, embarking on a distinguished career that saw him serve as Secretary to seven Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka. His tenure in this pivotal role earned him a reputation as a skilled administrator, and a steady hand during times of political transition and national transformation.

He was a highly deserving recipient of Sri Lanka’s prestigious title of ‘Deshamanya,’ conferred to those few distinguished individuals seen to have served the State to their utmost capacity and who merit the full respect and reverence of the State and all her citizens.

Born on 20 October 1930 in Colombo to Edmund and Edith Weerakoon, Bradman Weerakoon was educated at Holy Cross College, Kalutara, and later at S. Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa, before entering the University of Colombo, then known as University of Ceylon.

His academic journey laid the foundation for a career that would span decades and shape the course of Sri Lanka’s governance.
