Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) Members of Parliament yesterday sought the support of India and the United States to secure the release of Sivarasa Anojan, who is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia.
The MPs met Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and US Embassy in Sri Lanka Political and Economic Counsellor Anthony V. Pirnot, following a decision taken by the ITAK Parliamentary Group. ITAK Parliamentary Group Leader Shanakiyan Rasamanickam and other ITAK MPs took part in the discussions, the party said.
On behalf of Anojan’s family, the MPs briefed the diplomats on the facts and circumstances of the case known to them. They requested the diplomats’ support and assistance in efforts to secure his release and save his life.
The discussions also covered possible diplomatic avenues, including engagement with the relevant authorities and other parties who may be in a position to assist.
The MPs stressed the urgency of the situation and the importance of coordinated diplomatic engagement, given the grave consequences facing Anojan, according to ITAK.
ITAK said it would continue engaging with relevant diplomatic missions and other parties in its efforts to secure Anojan’s release.
