The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) yesterday announced plans to organise large-scale protests and public discussions opposing the Kimbul Oya project, following Cabinet approval granted earlier this week.

In a statement, ITAK said the project was approved at the Cabinet meeting held last Monday, the 20th. The party warned that the project could lead to changes in demographic patterns and adversely affect the rights of Tamil communities.

ITAK said these concerns were raised in Parliament by its MP Sathiyalingam, who explained how the project could alter population composition and impact the rights of Tamil people.

According to the statement, the party intends to launch protest campaigns aimed at preventing the implementation of the project. ITAK called on other political parties as well as the general public to join the protests.

The party also announced plans to hold discussions related to the project in Vavuniya in the coming days. It invited the public to participate in these discussions, share their views, and contribute to strengthening the protest movement.

ITAK said broad public participation would be essential in opposing the project and ensuring that concerns raised by affected communities are addressed.
