Heavy showers exceeding 100mm are likely in several provinces and districts today, as a low-pressure system near Sri Lanka continues to exert its influence despite moving westward away from the island, the Department of Meteorology said.

In its forecast issued at 4.00 p.m. yesterday, the department said showers or thundershowers would occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-Western provinces and in the Anuradhapura and Galle districts, with heavy falls exceeding 100mm likely at some places.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m., with fairly heavy falls exceeding 75mm likely at some places.

The department advised the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also expected at some places in the Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.
