Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya is expected to undertake an official visit to Pakistan in late June, Pakistan High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Major General Dr. Nayyar Naseer said during discussions with Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the two countries in agriculture, livestock and food production.
Minister Lal Kantha said Pakistan had consistently maintained supportive relations with Sri Lanka without exerting political pressure and expressed appreciation for what he described as Pakistan’s unconditional support to Sri Lanka over the years.
He also commented positively on Pakistan’s position in relation to the ongoing US-Iran tensions.
High Commissioner Naseer said both countries shared strong agricultural economies and had scope for closer collaboration across several sectors, particularly livestock and dairy production.
He noted that Pakistan ranked among the world’s leading producers of livestock and milk and said the country was prepared to support Sri Lanka in strengthening those sectors.
The High Commissioner also highlighted Pakistan’s capabilities in sugar, fruit and vegetable production, and said there was potential for cooperation in developing Basmati rice varieties suitable for cultivation in Sri Lanka.
He further said Pakistan produced internationally recognised mango varieties and expressed confidence in expanding agricultural trade and technical cooperation between the two countries.
