  • Issues statement in solidarity with the Iranian people against imperialist and Zionist aggression
  • Calls on Sri Lankan Government to condemn attack on Iran, to sever ties with the Zionist entity

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPLS) in a statement yesterday condemned in the strongest terms the Zionist aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On 13 June, the Zionist entity began a series of attacks targeting areas in the capital Tehran and other cities. Residential buildings were among the targets and women and children were among the victims. Among those martyred were leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps like Major General Hossein Salami, and nuclear scientists like Mohammad-Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi.

CPSL said the Israeli attacks on Iran come in the context of negotiations that were to be held between the United States and Iran. Therefore, these acts blatantly seek to provoke more war and conflict in the region, benefitting arms dealers and destroying the lives of working people. The crisis of imperialism knows no other solution than to wage war.

The US has distanced itself from the attack, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that Israel’s actions were “unilateral.” However, the US clearly had prior information of the attack as it evacuated their citizens including soldiers from the region beforehand.

Moreover, Israel’s expansionist and genocidal attacks against Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and now Iran could not have been made possible without the long-term economic and military support from the United States and allies in the Global North. The jets used to attack Iran were the US-made F-35, F-15, and F-16s.

The entire Global South stands in solidarity with Palestine and the people of Iran. The isolation and destruction of the pro-sovereign forces of Iran has been a long-term strategy of US imperialism and its Zionist ally. Attacks on Iran play into a more long-term strategy of imperialism where the grand target is China. Iran has the right to defend itself. Palestinians have the right to resist occupation.

The CPSL called on the Government of Sri Lanka to condemn the attack on Iran, to sever ties with the Zionist entity, and to take steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Sri Lankan workers in West Asia. “The CPSL calls upon the peace-loving political forces to stand against the fascist Zionists and imperialists, who patronise the most despicable Zionist regime in Israel. Long live the solidarity with people of Iran and West Asia! Long live the resistance against imperialism and Zionism,” the CPSL statement added.
