The Government is prepared to take up and debate the no-confidence motion expected to be moved by Opposition MPs against Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in Parliament on 22 and 23 January, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa said the debate would allow the Government to set out the facts surrounding education reforms already undertaken, as well as outline its policy direction going forward.

He said the Government expected the Opposition to formally table the no-confidence motion without delay, adding that time had already been earmarked in Parliament for the discussion.

The debate is scheduled for 22-23 January 22, with scope to allocate additional days if necessary, he said.

Dr. Jayatissa added that the debate would provide an opportunity for the Government to clearly explain the rationale, facts and realities of the education reforms to the public once the motion against the Prime Minister is presented.
