The Government expects to present to Parliament a draft Bill aimed at cancelling the parliamentary seats of Members of Parliament elected by the public who subsequently defect to another political party, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said Tuesday.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa said the proposed legislation was intended to address party crossovers by elected representatives after entering Parliament.
The Minister made the remarks in response to a question on whether the Government was seeking support from opposition parties amid ongoing economic challenges.
Dr. Jayatissa said the Government had no intention of recruiting opposition MPs into the ruling party despite speculation and media reports suggesting possible crossovers.
While acknowledging that some political parties may anticipate such developments, he said the Government was not preparing to bring opposition members into its ranks and would instead continue to govern based on the mandate it had received from the public.
The proposed legislation, if enacted, would mark a significant change to the treatment of parliamentary defections and party crossovers within Sri Lanka’s political system.
