Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero says the Government must carry out its duties honestly and not hoodwink the country’s people. “We have been subjected to many such experiences in recent times and therefore the Government must not trick the people,” he said.  “Emotions are running high and those who love the country are deeply hurt. The country has had to face many difficult obstacles. We as the Maha Sangha are also deeply distressed and saddened by the state of affairs,” he said.

The Thero made these comments while addressing a gathering at the Dharmayathanaya in Colombo on 22 July when newly appointed Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena visited the place of worship to seek the blessings of the Maha Sangha.  The Thero also called on all political parties to come together to provide relief to the Sri Lankan people. “The Government is facing a major challenge today. The people are facing shortages in fuel, gas, medicines, and milk powder as well as issues in transport and education. The temples are also facing the same problems,” he said. The Thero said therefore all divisions must be set aside and all parties must come together to work for the betterment of the country.

Elle Gunawansa Thero told Prime Minister Gunawardena that the Government must deliver solutions to the many burning issues faced by the people. “You simply cannot let the people suffer,” he said, adding that the Sri Lankan people have been extremely patient despite their trials and tribulations only because they live according to the Dhamma.  “The outcome would have been far different in another country,” he said. “The Government can ensure calm by giving the people solutions to their problems,” he added.  Recalling the instances he has worked towards the betterment of the country, Elle Gunawansa Thero said the Maha Sangha are prepared to throw their support behind the Government in order to save the country from impending disaster.

“But if the Government fails to deliver, I am prepared to agitate against it. Anyone not carrying out their duties must be openly criticised and brought to task,” he told the Prime Minister.
