The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has issued a circular setting out new guidelines for the continuation of Government office operations, aimed at conserving fuel amid the ongoing crisis.
The directive, issued to ministry secretaries, provincial chief secretaries, heads of departments and heads of State corporations and statutory bodies, outlines adjustments to work scheduling following the decision to grant public servants leave on Wednesdays.
Under the circular, institutions are required to organise official duties so that work scheduled for Wednesdays is carried out on Tuesdays.
However, heads of institutions have been given discretion to require officers to report for duty on Wednesdays where necessary. In such instances, no overtime, holiday pay or compensatory leave is to be granted.
The circular further states that employees of offices closed on Wednesdays should not be assigned duties on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays of the same week on the basis of overtime or compensatory arrangements.
Exceptions may be made in cases of urgent service requirements, subject to approval from the relevant authority, including ministry secretaries, provincial chief secretaries or heads of institutions.
In such approved cases, officers called in to work on weekends or public holidays may be granted overtime allowances, holiday pay or compensatory leave, the circular added.
