The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to retaining the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) under State ownership, whilst assuring that no employee rights or privileges will be curtailed through the proposed restructuring process of the utility.
This assurance was made during a high-level discussion held at the Energy Ministry last week under the patronage of Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody and 42 trade unions affiliated with the utility to gather feedback on the draft Bill and restructuring program of the CEB.
The Energy Minister assured the Government’s commitment to maintaining State ownership of the electricity sector. “The restructuring process would not involve any reduction of employee rights or undermine the existing privileges of the CEB staff,” he stressed.
Trade union representatives welcomed the opportunity for direct dialogue and expressed appreciation for the Government’s policy stance on public ownership. They also commended the Minister for his willingness to engage with unions and consider their input in shaping the reforms.
In addition, the trade union representatives reiterated their support for a restructuring initiative that respects workers’ rights and called for continued transparency and consultation as the process unfolds.
They pledged to contribute constructively to the development of the electricity sector, noting that they were prepared to extend the maximum support to ensure a successful transition.
