Sri Lanka will commemorate International Women’s Day 2025 with a week-long series of events, following the Cabinet of Ministers’ approval on Monday (24).
The initiative will run from 2-8 March under the theme ‘Building a Sustainable Tomorrow – Her Strength is the Path,’ aligning with this year’s global theme of ‘Equality, Empowerment and Dignity for All Women and Girls.’
“The programs will be conducted at national, provincial, district, and divisional levels, focusing on gender equality, economic empowerment, and the well-being of women and girls countrywide,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.
The decision reinforces Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and promoting inclusive development in line with international efforts spearheaded by the United Nations, which officially designated 8 March as International Women’s Day in 1977.
The initiative is expected to bring together policymakers, civil society organisations, and community leaders in discussions and activities aimed at promoting gender equality and recognising the contributions of women to the country’s national development.
