The Government has approved development projects valued at Rs. 23 billion under the “Prajashakthi” national poverty alleviation program, utilising the bulk of the Rs. 25 billion allocation provided under the 2026 Budget for the initiative.
According to the President’s Media Division, the approved projects have already been forwarded to District Secretaries for implementation across the country.
The projects are focused on livelihood development, strengthening the production economy and improving food security, based on priorities identified by Community Development Councils established at grassroots level.
The progress of the program was reviewed yesterday during a discussion chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.
Officials informed the President that 13,977 Community Development Councils had been established at Grama Niladhari Division level island-wide as part of the implementation framework of the
program.
The President also reviewed financial allocations made to the councils and progress relating to implementation mechanisms at district and divisional level.
According to officials, steps have also been taken to strengthen information technology infrastructure supporting “Prajashakthi” units operating under Divisional Secretariats and District Secretariats.
Training and awareness programs are currently being conducted across all 25 districts for officials attached to Community Development Councils, the President’s Media Division said.
The “Prajashakthi” initiative is being implemented as a flagship Government program aimed at rural poverty alleviation and improving livelihoods in low-income communities.
