Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera
Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera was arrested on Saturday on an outstanding warrant and remanded until today (5) by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
Officers of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) produced Gnanasara Thera before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The court also ordered that steps be taken to produce him before the Court of Appeal today.
The CCD arrested Gnanasara Thera at a forest monastery in Thiniyawala, Kalutara.
The Court of Appeal had issued a warrant for his arrest on 29 September after he failed to appear before Court in contempt of court proceedings. The Court ordered that he be arrested and produced on 1 October, and directed that the warrant be executed through the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
A two-judge bench comprising Court of Appeal Justices Mayadunne Corea and Lakmali Karunanayake delivered the order on a request by the Attorney General.
The Attorney General had filed a motion seeking the Court’s directions to give effect to a Supreme Court judgement annulling the presidential pardon granted to Gnanasara Thera by former President Maithripala Sirisena.
Gnanasara Thera was not present in Court on 29 September, but was represented by his lawyer.
