Former UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma passes away in tragic accident

Former United National Party (UNP) member and Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma tragically passed away yesterday evening due to electrocution. 

The incident occurred when he attempted to connect two electrical circuits at his home, resulting in his untimely demise after being admitted to the Nagoda Hospital.

Thewarapperuma, born on 3 May 1960, was a prominent figure in the political arena, having served as a Member of Parliament from the UNP. He was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs during the tenure of the UNP-led coalition Government in 2015. He was known for his dedication to public service and his contributions to various development projects during his tenure as a Parliamentarian, Deputy Minister as well as during his retirement from politics.

Thewarapperuma’s sudden demise has sent shockwaves throughout the country as he was admired by masses for his social service activities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic for having provided food, dry rations and other necessities to the rural population of his constituency.
