Former United National Party (UNP) Horana Municipal Councillor Renuka Damayanthi has been remanded until 21 July after being arrested over the alleged defrauding of six Pettah textile businessmen of nearly Rs. 160 million through dishonoured cheques.
According to reports, the suspect had been evading the complainants for some time. After receiving information that she was at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, on Saturday (18), the businessmen went to the premises, where an altercation reportedly ensued.
The Mirihana Police intervened and detained all parties involved. During questioning, the businessmen lodged formal complaints against the former Councillor, following which the Mirihana Police handed the suspect over to the Wattala Police for further investigation.
The suspect was produced before Wattala Acting Magistrate Merril Boteju yesterday (19), who ordered that she be remanded until 21 July.
