Suresh Sallay

Former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Chief Major General (Retd.) Suresh Sallay was arrested early yesterday in connection with ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said.

Sallay was taken into custody in the Peliyagoda Police Division by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Police said the arrest was carried out based on evidence that emerged during the course of investigations into the coordinated bombings of 21 April 2019.

He has been arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and will be detained for 72 hours for further questioning.

Addressing the media, ASP Wootler said the suspect would be handed over to the CID to continue investigations. He added that further details regarding the future course of action would be disclosed in due course.

Despite questions raised by journalists at the briefing, Police declined to specify the charges against Sallay, stating that details would only be made public upon completion of the inquiry.

At the time of the Easter Sunday attacks, Sallay held the rank of Brigadier. He subsequently served as Director of Army Intelligence before being appointed as State Intelligence Chief. Most recently, he had been serving as an adviser at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia.
