Foreign Minister offers condolences to Iran following death of Ayatollah Khamenei

Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath on Wednesday visited the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Colombo to convey condolences following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister expressed Sri Lanka’s sympathies to the Government and people of Iran over the passing of the long-serving leader.

“Today, l offered my deepest condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran on the death of His Eminence Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

In a statement posted on the social media platform ‘X,’ Herath noted that relations between Sri Lanka and Iran had expanded during Khamenei’s leadership.

“Our bilateral ties broadened significantly under his tenure. Sri Lanka remains appreciative of Iran’s friendship. Our thoughts are with the Iranian people,” the Minister said.
