The examination of evidence before the Committee of Inquiry investigating allegations of gross abuse of power against suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon concluded on Tuesday (1) following the completion of presentations by both the Prosecution and the Respondent.
The Committee, Chaired by Supreme Court Judge P.P. Surasena and including Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and National Police Commission Chairman E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, reconvened to record the testimony of two additional witnesses presented by the Prosecution. These witnesses had been overseas on official duties, and their evidence was recorded following an agreement between the parties to obtain it after 26 June.
The proceedings were held in the presence of Senior Deputy Solicitor General (President’s Counsel) Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, representing the Attorney General’s Department, while R.S. Weerawickrama, Attorney-at-Law, appeared on behalf of the IGP.
Both the Prosecution in representation of the Attorney General’s Department and the Respondent Inspector General of Police agreed to submit their respective written submissions to the Committee of Inquiry before 3:30 p.m. on 8 July 2025.
