Police have arrested a former Army soldier in connection with the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, disclosing fresh details about the suspect and the investigation.
The 46-year-old suspect, identified as a resident of Beruwala, was taken into custody on Saturday in the Delduwa area within the Ambalangoda Police Division. Officers from the Homagama Divisional Crime Investigation Unit carried out the arrest while conducting parallel inquiries alongside the Western Province South Crime Division.
Police said the suspect had previously served in the Sri Lanka Army and had legally left the force during the general amnesty granted in 2009.
At the time of arrest, officers recovered a mobile phone believed to have been used in planning or executing the crime. The suspect has since been handed over to the Western Province South Crime Division for further questioning.
The shooting occurred on 13 February in the Akuregoda area under the Thalangama Police Division. The lawyer and his wife were inside their vehicle when two gunmen, travelling in another car, opened fire, killing both at the scene.
Earlier, three individuals were arrested in the Kottawa, Athurugiriya, and Kahathuduwa Police areas on suspicion of assisting and conspiring in the attack.
The latest suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court. Investigations are ongoing.
