Former Minister S.M. Chandrasena was yesterday served with an indictment before the Colombo High Court after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption filed corruption charges against him.

The indictment was read before Ravindra Premaratne, who ordered Chandrasena’s release on cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The case was fixed for further hearing on 22 July.

According to the indictment, Chandrasena is alleged to have abused his official position between 1 January and 31 December 2014 by influencing the Director of Procurement and other officials at the Anuradhapura District Secretariat to distribute 36,000 kg of seed maize, imported at State expense for sale to low-income farmers at concessionary prices, among his political supporters to secure a political advantage during the presidential election.
