The Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay on Monday emphasised on opportunities for mutual economic growth between India and Sri Lanka and assured support when needed.

Speaking as the Chief Guest at the Induction Ceremony of the 26th President of CA Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner said: “Sri Lanka occupies a central part in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’.” He would further elaborate on the matter, stating that the connection of the two countries far extended past geographical location.

Emphasis was put on the “committed leadership” which continues to help strengthen ties from a diplomatic standpoint. From an economic standpoint, praise was provided to Sri Lankan business leaders who had a veil of professionalism that helped increase the reputation of the country.

In spite of the challenges that the pandemic had brought on both countries, the High Commissioner maintained that there had been mutual economic growth in the post-pandemic period.

Sri Lanka also accounts for a majority of flights into India in the weeks following the opening of the country and Indian tourists have become the largest base for Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, to show solidarity, Indian business leaders had come to Sri Lanka and created economic opportunities as a “testament to Sri Lanka’s richness and versatility”.

There was further optimism that India would be willing to partner with Sri Lanka to turn the economic challenges that the country is embroiled in into opportunities for mutual growth.
