Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody was granted bail by the Colombo High Court after indictments were served against him in a corruption case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The indictments were taken up before Colombo High Court Judge, following which the court ordered Jayakody’s release on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each.
The court also directed that his fingerprints be recorded and a report submitted.
According to the indictment, Jayakody is alleged to have caused a loss of over Rs. 8.8 million to the Government in 2016 while serving at Lanka Fertiliser Company, by granting an undue advantage to a private company during a procurement process.
He has been charged under Section 70 of the Bribery Act for corruption. The case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on 6 May.
