Election Commission begins notifying political parties to name new Chairpersons to LG bodies

The Election Commission yesterday announced that it will begin notifying political parties and independent groups that have secured a majority in Local Government (LG) bodies to name Chairpersons for the institutions they control.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said notifications will go to the Secretaries of parties and groups with over 50% of the vote in any local authority, following the release of the 2025 LG election results, which were made public on Wednesday (7). The National People’s Power (NPP) gained control of the highest number of local bodies. It secured 43.26% of the total vote and 3,927 seats countrywide. The party now leads in 266 councils, including 23 Municipal Councils, 26 Urban Councils, and 217 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

Other key performers in the election include the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), and several smaller parties and independent groups. However, most did not win more than half the vote or seats in the councils they

contested.

The Election Commission also confirmed that newly elected members at the ward level will be officially gazetted in the coming days.

It added that political parties and independent groups will soon be informed of the female representatives to be appointed to local bodies, in line with mandatory gender quotas. He said the appointments of women will depend on how many were elected directly. “If gaps remain, additional representatives will be named to meet the required numbers,” he added.
