The Cabinet has approved extending the education reforms to Grades 2 and 6 in 2027, while continuing those introduced for Grade 1 this year, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said last week.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa said the approval was based on a concept paper prepared by the National Education Commission (NEC), the National Curriculum Framework, and the School-Based Evaluation and Assessment Guidelines.

The NEC revised the concept paper to incorporate policy recommendations. It will be reviewed by the National Steering Committee for New Education Reforms and its five subcommittees: curriculum reform, human resource development, education administration and infrastructure, evaluation and assessment, and public awareness.

The National Institute of Education (NIE) revised its 2023 National Curriculum Framework in line with the recommendations, and the Steering Committee approved it on 13 August, following approval by the NIE Academic Affairs Board and Institutional Council.

Activity books and teacher guides for all three terms are being prepared for Grades 1 and 2, along with modules and teacher guides for Grade 6. The NIE has trained master trainers for primary and secondary subjects, and provincial teacher training plans are being drawn up.

The Steering Committee has also approved a Policy Guide on School-Based Evaluation and Assessment, prepared by its Evaluation and Assessment SubCommittee, which takes into account the resources available within the school system.
