Sri Lankan marine biologist Dr. Asha de Vos was recognised at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, where her portrait appeared on the silver screen as part of events marking International Women’s Day and the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).
The portrait, taken by photographer Bre Hartman, was included in a campaign by the President of the UN General Assembly highlighting women who have overcome barriers and achieved breakthroughs in their fields.
Displayed alongside the image was a message from Dr. de Vos: “They told me I was not capable – so I made a discovery that changed the world.”
Dr. de Vos said the statement was intended to encourage women everywhere to persist in the face of doubt and pursue paths that can inspire others to follow.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra congratulated Dr. de Vos and UN Women Sri Lanka following the recognition.
