MP Dilan Perera

MP Dilan Perera has slammed President Ranil Wickremesinghe, claiming he is playing ball with the people’s problems and exacting revenge on them for his continuous defeats at elections.

The MP made these comments at a press conference held at the Freedom People’s Congress office on Wednesday.

Perera commenting on a recent statement by a Government Minister claiming Wickremesinghe has succeeded in the tasks he set out to do in comparison to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the MP said Wickremesinghe has merely passed the buck. “The only way to deduce if Ranil has passed or failed is by analysing the situation of the country,” he said.

Pointing out the prices of essentials, Perera said going by the cost comparisons, Wickremesinghe has failed as a leader. He also said the Government led by the President was attempting to intimidate university students through the introduction of repressive laws.

“However, thanks to the legal system, the Government had to scrap the proposed rehabilitation law. If it was introduced, all political opponents of the Government would have ended up in a Batalanda-style torture camp,” Perera said.

“Has Ranil passed by doing these things? Can one be considered successful in this manner? Is increasing the electricity and water tariffs a sign of success?” he asked. Perera accused the Government of failing to recover loan payments of the wealthy and instead resorting to taxing the poor.

He also claimed the Government is not attempting to provide relief to the people by gathering information on the promise of providing relief. “They are asking you to fill these forms to see how they can cut social welfare benefits instead of increasing handouts to the people,” he alleged.
