Western Province remains worst affected; island-wide mosquito control drive launched

Sri Lanka has recorded 57,668 dengue cases so far this year, with the death toll rising to 36, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).

Consultant Community Physician Dr. Prashila Samaraweera said the Western Province continues to account for the highest number of reported infections, while case numbers have also increased in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Badulla, Kurunegala and Puttalam.

Health authorities said the upward trend has prompted intensified vector control measures, with island-wide mosquito control programmes being conducted yesterday under the guidance of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government.

Acting National Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Kapila Kannangara urged the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by maintaining clean surroundings and regularly inspecting their premises.

The health authorities continue to stress that source reduction remains the most effective measure to curb the spread of dengue as the number of infections continues to rise.
