Main Opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said he has temporarily stepped away from Facebook, saying the platform has become unproductive, while alleging that the Government is systematically targeting Opposition politicians.
He made the remarks in response to questions over his earlier comments on the possibility of toppling the Government by joining forces with what he described as “thieves and robbers.”
“I don’t go on Facebook because it’s full of fools. It is not a battleground where intelligent people fight. That’s why I don’t go there or even look at it,” Jayasekara said.
The MP also claimed that the Government was arresting various individuals and attempting to discredit Opposition members by branding them with allegations ranging from racism and theft to drug-related offences and even terrorism.
Jayasekara argued that such allegations were being used to tarnish the reputations of politicians and questioned who would restore their names if the accusations were later found to be unfounded.
He also alleged that members of the joint Opposition were all being drawn into the same narrative, making it increasingly difficult for them to function effectively as an opposition.
