The Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Chamari Rodrigo met with the President of the ‘Mumbai Press Club’, Gurbir Singh recently. Singh is a senior journalist of the Indian Express Newspaper.
The Mumbai Press Club, which was established in 1968 is a representative organisation of journalists in Western India and Mumbai with a membership of over 2,000. Based in South Mumbai, the Press Club is a central hub for press conferences and seminars, as well as debates on issues that concern the media.
During the meeting, Consul General Rodrigo also met with Narendra Wable, President of the ‘Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh’ which is the oldest organisation for Mumbai journalists, established in 1941. The media personnel were briefed on the present situation in Sri Lanka following the Easter attack. The Consul General asserted that normalcy has been restored in the country and that imminent threats and further attacks have also been destabilised.
“Sri Lanka Consulate continually engages with the media and travel trade in the Western India to promote Sri Lanka as a safe destination. Sri Lanka Consulate, together with Sri Lanka Tourism organises a FAM Tour for Indian journalists who can visit the country and share their first hand opinion and experience to the Indian public,” she further added.
The Consul General invited the Mumbai Press Club and the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh to join the promotional efforts undertaken by the Sri Lanka Consulate to boost the country’s battered tourism sector by the Easter attack. Singh expressed their support and stated that the Mumbai Press Club has established contacts with many SAARC region countries. He said that they have sister relationship with Karachi Press Club and have been exchanging delegations for the last few years as a measure to improve people-to-people contact.
The Mumbai Press Club is keen to establish similar exchanges with Sri Lankan journalists.
