The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday approved a proposal to implement the “Community Effective Model Village” program as part of the broader Clean Sri Lanka national project.

The initiative will select one village from each Divisional Secretariat between 2025 and 2027, targeting around 50 households in each village to transform them into model communities through a participatory rural development approach.

“The program aims to create sustainable, well-rounded model villages by applying criteria in key areas such as education, economic opportunities, health and sanitation, household management, good governance, cultural and spiritual development, and environmental conservation,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Wednesday.

He said the District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries will be tasked with identifying suitable villages for the program. “Once selected, these communities will be supported through the coordinated efforts of field officers from various line ministries, ensuring that the needs of the villagers are addressed effectively and efficiently,” he added.

Dr. Jayatissa said the Government expects this strategic initiative to empower communities, improve rural living standards, and promote sustainable development across the country, in line with the Clean Sri Lanka vision.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunneththi was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
