Commemoration of 118th birth anniversary of Prof. Walpola Sri Rahula Thero on 24 May

The 118th birth anniversary of Prof. Walpola Sri Rahula Thero will be held on 24 May at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute at 3 p.m.

A commemorative lecture and panel discussion will be held on the theme ‘Freedom Education Struggle, Monastic Politics in the 1940s and Present Sri Lanka’ at the event.

The keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri of the Department of History, University of Colombo, while renowned scholars Dr. Sunil Wijesiriwardena, Chulananda Samaranayake, and Prof. Prabha Manuratne will be joining the panel discussion.

The event is open to the public and aims to honour the enduring legacy of Prof. Rahula Thero as a visionary monk, scholar, and national figure.

Prof. Rahula Thero made a great contribution to promote Theravada Buddhism in the world by expanding educational opportunities in Sri Lanka using the opportunity of the Free Education Act while making a pioneering contribution to the establishment of Buddhist and Pali schools in the country.

He has written books such as ‘What the Buddha Taught,’ ‘History of Buddhism in Ceylon,’ ‘Zen and the Taming of the Bull,’ and ‘Heritage of the Monks.’
