Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa
The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of India to secure a financial grant of Rs. 264.59 million to procure electric motorcycles for field officers in fisheries sector.
The proposal submitted by the Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Minister, aims to strengthen field-level operations by improving mobility and logistical support for officers engaged in regulatory, research, and development activities across the island.
“Under the initiative, 430 officers attached to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the National Aquaculture Development Authority, and Field Research Assistants of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency are expected to receive electric motorcycles in 2026,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing.
He said the Government has placed special emphasis on enhancing the operational efficiency of these officers, who play a critical role in monitoring fisheries activities, supporting aquaculture development, conducting field research, and ensuring compliance with regulations in coastal and inland water bodies.
By providing electric motorcycles, authorities aim to ensure uninterrupted transport facilities, enabling officers to carry out inspections, data collection, extension services, and research duties more productively and efficiently. The move is also aligned with broader efforts to promote environmentally sustainable transport solutions within the public sector.
