Cabinet clears construction of key infrastructure for Uva Wellassa University Faculty of Medicine

The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved commencing the construction of essential infrastructure for the Faculty of Medicine at Uva Wellassa University, addressing critical gaps that have hindered the proper functioning of the newly established faculty.

It was decided to commence procurement activities this year and to provide the necessary funding allocated in phases under the Budget framework for 2026-2028.

The full construction of pre-clinical buildings, administrative offices and lecture halls is estimated to cost Rs. 2,149 million.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa on Tuesday said Faculty of Medicine was established in accordance with the 2023 Budget proposal and 80 students were enrolled following the modernisation and adaptation of existing university buildings, supported by an allocation of Rs. 200 million.

Since its inception, both the first and second academic years have been successfully launched. However, the absence of dedicated pre-clinical laboratory facilities, lecture halls and administrative buildings has posed significant challenges to delivering a comprehensive medical education.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as the Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
