The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday (9) approved purchasing 16 waste transport compactor trucks to formalise collection and transport of solid waste in selected Local Government bodies utilising an allocation of Rs. 500 million from the 2025 Budget under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ program.

Sri Lanka, like many other developing countries, is grappling with mounting challenges in waste management. Rapid urbanisation, growing population densities, and limited resources have placed significant strain on existing municipal services.

Hence, the requirement for enhancing infrastructure facilities required for urban waste management has been recognised by the Government.

“The newly approved compactor trucks will help ensure that urban waste is transported to designated treatment stations in a manner that minimises public inconvenience and environmental impact,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

Accordingly, transporting the urban waste that is collected in an environmentally friendly manner to the stations with minimum strain to the public is carried out with waste transport compactor trucks and tractors, and actions have been taken in the year 2017 to purchase 100 local compactor trucks utilising local allocations.

Despite that investment, he said the existing fleet of compactor trucks and tractors operated by Local Government bodies remains inadequate to handle the increasing volumes of waste generated in cities and towns across the country.

“Expanding the fleet is essential not only to manage current waste levels, but also prepare for future demands as the country continues its path of economic development and urban expansion,” he added.

The proposal to this effect, submitted by Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
