The Cabinet of Ministers cleared a proposal put forth by the President, who also serves as the Defence Minister, to introduce the National Disaster Management Plan – 2023-2030 in Parliament.

The decision marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.

By the provisions of the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act No. 13 of 2005, the formulation and execution of the National Disaster Management Plan fall under the primary jurisdiction of the National Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
