Cabinet approves multiple medical procurement contracts worth over $ 5.6 m

The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved a series of international medical procurement contracts valued at over $ 5.6 million to strengthen the supply of essential drugs and surgical equipment in the country’s healthcare system.

Among the approvals was the purchase of 900,000 pre-filled syringes/vials (0.4 ml, 4,000 IU) of Enoxaparin Sodium, a critical anticoagulant used in treating heart patients. The contract, valued at $ 1.143 million, was awarded to M/s Gland Pharma Ltd., of India, which submitted the lowest responsive bid through international competitive tendering.

Similarly, a separate tender for 450,000 pre-filled syringes/vials (0.6 ml, 6,000 IU) of Enoxaparin Sodium was awarded to M/s Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd., of India for $ 751,500, also based on the recommendation of the Standing High-Level Procurement Committee.

In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the procurement of 50 Polyaxial MRI-related Lumbar Pedicle Screws and 20 sets of Posterior Thoracic Spine Fusion equipment. The supply contracts were awarded to Avenierr Pharma Ltd., and A. Baur & Co., Ltd., respectively.

The Government also cleared the purchase of 10,000 vials of Tenecteplase 40 mg, a thrombolytic drug used for heart attack patients, at a cost of $ 3.7 million. The supply will come from M/s Boehringer Ingelheim India Ltd., the local subsidiary of German manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH and Co-KG.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the procurements are part of ongoing efforts to maintain adequate stocks of life-saving medicines and specialised surgical equipment in State hospitals, ensuring uninterrupted treatment for patients with cardiovascular and spinal conditions.

The proposal to this effect, submitted by Health Minister Dr. Jayatissa, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
